How the Numbers Work
Every item uses the same researched figures used throughout this site: vegetables are calculated by how many plants fit per square metre, fruit and nut trees by average yield per mature tree, and animal products by per-animal annual output. Space, savings, and setup cost all draw on this same underlying data, so the numbers stay consistent with the Block Planner, Yearly Food Planner, Savings Calculator, and Cost Estimator elsewhere on this site.
Setup cost is only shown for animals. Setup cost data (fencing, housing, water) exists for every animal on this site. No equivalent reliable setup cost dataset exists yet for individual vegetable, fruit, or nut plantings, so this tool doesn't estimate one rather than guess at a number we can't stand behind.
Self-sufficiency levels change which items are included by default, based on difficulty ratings already used elsewhere on the site — not an arbitrary cutoff. Every item can still be added or removed by hand regardless of level.

How is this different from the Beginner Starter Kit or Block Planner?
The Starter Kit gives a quick shortlist when you don't know where to start. The Block Planner checks whether a specific set of plants and animals fits your land. This tool builds the whole plan from scratch — region, land, household, categories, and a self-sufficiency level — covering every relevant item on the site at once with space, cost, and savings figures together.
What do the self-sufficiency levels actually control?
Each level changes which items are included by default, based on difficulty ratings already used elsewhere on the site. Level 1 includes only a handful of bare-minimum staples per category. Level 4 includes everything, including demanding animals like dairy cattle. Every item can still be added or removed by hand regardless of level.
Why is setup cost only shown for animals, not vegetables or fruit trees?
Setup cost data — fencing, housing, water — exists for animals through the Cost Estimator. No equivalent reliable setup cost dataset exists yet for individual crops, so this tool doesn't estimate one rather than guess.
What if my selections don't fit my land?
The tool tells you honestly rather than hiding it. Selecting every item at a high self-sufficiency level won't fit most blocks — that's not a bug. Try a lower level, fewer categories, or deselect specific items you don't actually want.
Are these figures guaranteed?
No — they're estimates from reference data used throughout this site. Actual yields, space needs, and prices vary with variety, climate, region, and how things are managed. Use this as a planning starting point, not a guarantee.
